Air Jordan 1 Chinese New Year is Dropping & It’s Hot

Taking part in the Chinese New Year collection, the Air Jordan 1 low Chinese New Year stands out! In fact, Nike is dropping em fine kicks to celebrate BIG. As the festivities of the new year begin on Friday 12, Nike is giving you the chance to cop an OG Bred AJ1!

Year of the Rat, Ox, Tiger,……& NIKE

So, as we all know, Nike is always on the go when it comes to celebrations. The sneaker giant has been doing it for a while now. Hence, the Jordan 1 low Chinese New Year is not the first version of the Year of the Ox. Why the Ox though? Before revealing an older version of the year of the Ox let us just go through where we stand in the Chinese Zodiac. This in fact would clarify where Nike CNY collections are heading.

12 Chinese Zodiac signs

The Chinese Horoscope includes 12 animals: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. In addition, the Chinese honor each year one of the animals using chronological order. Accordingly, the Chinese Zodiac is a 12-year repeated cycle. As 2021 is the Year of the Ox, an older version of this inspo would have to date back to 2009.

FYI: for those interested in Chinese horoscopes and fortune-telling, here’s a website that could help.

The 2009 Year of the Ox

To celebrate the 2009 Chinese Year of the Ox, Nike went for a premium Air Max 1. The shoe draws its inspiration from the Chinese cultural revolution occurring between 1966 and 1976. In fact, the shoe’s colorway (white, bone, red and yellow) symbolize the Red Guards uniforms. Add to that, the sneaker sports on its tongue Chinese calligraphy that means “perseverance” or “hard work”. In order to honor the Zodiac Year, Nike illustrated a protruded golden Ox on the heel with red rays highlighting it. These kicks were Nike’s first-ever seen Air runner. These sneakers still stand out among the new CNY releases due to their important historical reference.
