TBT: The Mighty Red Jordan 3 Doernbecher Collaboration!

TBT: The Mighty Red Jordan 3 Doernbecher Collaboration!

It’s been a long time since it first launched. But whenever someone asks what our favorite Doernbecher Freestyle pair is, we just know. The Air Jordan 3 Doernbecher collaboration was, and still is, the best design among the Freestyle program! So let’s go down memory lane and discover the story all over again.

And if you missed our previous TBTs, check them out here!

The Doernbecher Freestyle Program

It all started back in 2003. Nike’s creative director Michael Doherty had just become a board member at the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation. He was discussing how to support the Oregon Hospital with his son Connor. Connor proposed having kids from the hospital design their own Nike kicks. And that’s how the Doernbecher Freestyle Program was born! 16 years later, this program made 96 patients happier and raised more than $27 million for the hospital. However, 2020’s Freestyle event has been postponed due to COVID-19.

From 2003 moving to 2010. The 7th edition of the Freestyle program took place and included 6 different kicks. The kicks were the Zoom P-Rod 2.5, Air Force 1, Free Run+, Air Max Zenyth, Zoom Vomero+ 5, and Air Jordan 3. Each of the kicks was special in its own way, but the Jordan 3 Doernbecher just stood out! The kicks dropped on December 4, 2010. And naturally, they sold out in no time!

Behind the Design

Cole Johanson, an 11-year old cancer patient back then, designed the iconic Jordan 3 Doernbecher. The kicks featured a red leather upper. Upon closer inspection, we can notice Cole’s name carefully spelled out inside the diamond pattern on the upper.

The look is complete with 3M details and the signature elephant print… in red! The midsole came in a mix of silver, black, and translucent white which extends to the outsole. The insoles are a pep talk on their own with “Strength” and “Courage” prints on them. The coolest detail though? That would be the spaghetti and chocolate easter eggs that are hiding behind the pull tab. So all in all, this is a pair that any sneakerhead would love to own. Or maybe flip?

Jordan 3 Doernbecher Gets the Retro Treatment!

You know it’s a great pair of shoes when Jordan Brand decides to give it the retro treatment. This drop, which happened on July 20, 2017, is the equivalent of royalty in terms of sneakers. Air Jordan 3 Doernbecher is actually the first pair of the DB Freestyle program to get a retro version! The second pair is the AJ6 DB that dropped in 2019 and was one of the year’s best releases. And that’s a pair that can actually make you more money than most Yeezys!

Celebrities Rocking Air Jordan 3 DB!

Celebrities and sneaker collectors are often seen rocking extremely sought-after sneakers on different occasions. So it came as no surprise when Jordan 3 Doernbecher made it to the feet of big names. Such names include the rapper Ludacris and the professional basketball player Nate Robinson.

How Much Are They Worth in 2020?

So now, on to the money talk! Both editions of the Air Jordan 3 Doernbecher retailed for $160. However, their average resale values are slightly different. The 2010 edition currently resells for an average of $538. Although retros usually resell for less than the original releases, this pair resells for more! The 2013 re-issue actually resells for around $630! So that leaves room to question whether the third time is the charm. We certainly hope so.
